About St Mary's Church
On St Mary’s Street in Preston, St Mary’s Church is a former Anglican place of worship. The Diocese of Blackburn closed it for parish use in 1996, and in 2006 it became a conservation facility for the Museum of Lancashire. It has held Grade II protection since 1979.
Work on the church commenced in 1836 in response to Preston’s expanding population, with the building opening two years later. John Latham created the original Romanesque Revival design. Between 1852 and 1856, E. H. Shellard enlarged it with transepts and a chancel designed to harmonise with the earlier structure. Sandstone walls support a slate-covered roof, while the interior arrangement includes a nave of five bays. Rounded openings characterise most of the windows. At the southern end, a substantial staged tower culminates in a narrow spire. The transepts feature corner turrets capped by pyramidal roofs. Its churchyard gates, boundary masonry and gateposts are separately protected at Grade II.
