About St Mary at Fernyhalgh and Ladyewell
St Mary at Fernyhalgh and Ladyewell is an active Roman Catholic church on Fernyhalgh Lane, Preston, close to the shrine at Ladyewell House. It remains a place for Mass and pilgrimage, while the house also welcomes visitors. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Built between 1792 and 1794, the church provided more space for pilgrims after the chapel in Ladyewell House became inadequate. Its cruciform structure is mainly red brick, with sandstone details and a slate covering, and the adjoining presbytery stands at the eastern end. The west front features a Tuscan-style semicircular porch and a small bell opening above. Inside are a gallery supported by Doric columns, richly decorated nineteenth-century work, an alabaster communion rail and stained glass installed in 1854. The sanctuary includes a painted and gilded reredos, while a memorial commemorates Catharine Hesketh, a Benedictine nun and former abbess in Ghent.
