About St Mark's Church, Preston

St Mark’s Church, Preston, stands on St Mark’s Road in Preston, Lancashire. Formerly serving an Anglican parish, it ceased religious use in 1982 and was later adapted as residential apartments. The building is protected at Grade II* level. In 1993, its benefice was combined with St Michael and All Angels in Ashton-on-Ribble, where the altar and several fittings were rehoused in a chapel named for St Mark.

Edward Graham Paley of Lancaster designed the main structure, erected during 1862 and 1863; the prominent tower followed from 1868 to 1870. Sandstone masonry, slate roofing and Decorated Gothic detailing define the exterior. Its arrangement incorporates a four-bay nave, paired transepts, a polygon-ended chancel, western entrance porch and tower at the north-east corner. Conceived to hold its own beside St Walburge’s soaring spire, the tower features four irregular levels, a slender eight-sided staircase turret, openwork parapeting and pinnacles. Circular windows distinguish the transepts, and an expansive five-light window overlooks the western porch.
