About St Luke's Church, Preston
St Luke’s Church is in Preston, Lancashire, and formerly served as an Anglican parish church. Now closed for worship, it was formally made redundant in 1990 and adapted as flats after becoming a residential property in 1995. It is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Edwin Hugh Shellard designed the church, which was erected during 1858 and 1859 at a projected cost of £4,733. It welcomed its first congregation on 3 August 1859 and originally seated 800 people. Sandstone walls and slate roofing frame an Early English design, comprising an aisled nave of six bays, a clerestory and a chancel. A five-part tower at the south-west corner supports a broach spire pierced by two rows of small openings. Distinctive details include angel-form gargoyles, eight-sided pinnacles, paired lancets along the aisles, round clerestory windows and largely Geometrical window tracery.
