About St Joseph's Church
St Joseph’s Church stands on Skeffington Road in Preston, Lancashire. It remains an active Roman Catholic place of worship within the Diocese of Lancaster and is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Designed by J. O’Byrne, the church was erected in 1873–74 for an area shaped by cotton manufacturing. Its dedication reflects Saint Joseph’s association with workers. Built for £8,000, it uses red brick, sandstone detailing and slate roofing. The interior has pink granite columns, a barrel-vaulted nave ceiling and mosaic paving in the sanctuary and adjoining chapels. Notable fittings include an ornate carved reredos, an octagonal marble pulpit and stained glass by Mayer of Munich and Casolini of St Helens. Decorative work and the addition of the Stations of the Cross followed in 1897, costing £2,000.
