About St John the Evangelist's Church, Kirkham
St John the Evangelist’s Church, Kirkham, is a Roman Catholic church on Ribby Road in Kirkham, near Preston, Lancashire. It remains in use as a parish church within the Diocese of Lancaster and is protected as a Grade II listed building. The historic name ‘The Willows’ continues to be associated with it.
Augustus Pugin designed the church, which was constructed from 1842 and completed in 1845, replacing a Catholic chapel dating from 1809. Built of Longridge sandstone beneath slate roofs, it follows an early Decorated Gothic design, with an aisled nave, clerestory, chancel and a 100-foot spire. Surviving Pugin furnishings include the sedilia, credence table and altered original altar, while the stained glass dates from the mid nineteenth century onwards. The organ was made by J. C. Bishop in 1846. Six Whitechapel bells, cast in 1844, form the tower’s ring. Interior changes around 1895 included lowering the floor and moving Pugin’s rood screen; further fittings were introduced in 1906.
