About Central Methodist Church
Central Methodist Church stands on Lune Street in Preston, Lancashire. It remains an active place of Methodist worship within the Preston Ribble Circuit and Lancashire District. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Founded in 1817 as a Wesleyan chapel, it was an early British public building to use gas lighting. Poulton and Woodman substantially altered it in 1862–63. The rectangular, two-storey structure is brick, with a sandstone ashlar façade and slate roofing. Its symmetrical eastern front is dominated by a large rounded arch supported by paired Corinthian columns. Inside, a horseshoe gallery rests on slender cast-iron columns with Ionic capitals, while glazed panels occupy the centre of the coffered ceiling. A three-manual organ made by W. E. Richardson replaced the original Gray and Davison instrument in 1881. Adaptations during the 1990s added accommodation for people experiencing poverty and homelessness, alongside new community facilities.
