About Christ Church, Over Wyresdale
Christ Church, Over Wyresdale is a Church of England parish church in a secluded setting west of Abbeystead in Lancashire. It remains in active use within the Diocese of Blackburn and is protected as a Grade II listed building. Its benefice is shared with St Mark’s, Dolphinholme, and St Peter’s, Quernmore.
The church was erected in 1733 as the successor to a chapel with origins in the fifteenth century. In 1894, Chester architect John Douglas carried out an extensive restoration, adding the tower’s spire and supporting buttresses, alongside a south porch, north vestry and new sanctuary. Constructed from roughly laid sandstone and roofed with slate, the building comprises a western tower and a nave leading into the chancel. A pulpit dated 1684 survives from before the present structure.
