About St Michael's Chapel, Lancaster Moor Hospital
St Michael’s Chapel, Lancaster Moor Hospital, stands east of Lancaster in Lancashire. Formerly the hospital’s Anglican place of worship, it is now redundant and has been converted into flats. The building is protected at Grade II.
Completed in 1866, the church was designed by Lancaster architect E. G. Paley in a Neo-Norman style. Sandstone walls are finished with dressed stone details beneath a slate-covered roof. Its cross-shaped plan includes a nave, western porch, transepts to the north and south, and a chancel ending in a curved apse. Rounded window openings are framed by alternating red and yellow sandstone blocks. Each transept has a circular rose window positioned over a pair of narrow, single-light windows.
