Lancaster Cathedral stands on St Peter’s Road in the Lancashire city of Lancaster. This Roman Catholic place of worship became the cathedral of the newly formed Diocese of Lancaster in 1924. It remains active, hosting services, concerts and other events, and welcomes visitors. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Lancaster’s Catholic mission began in 1798, with its first chapel consecrated the following year. A larger church dedicated to St Peter was constructed on a new site between 1857 and 1859 to designs by Edward Graham Paley. Built from dressed sandstone with mainly slate roofs, it follows the Gothic Revival style. Its prominent tower and spire rise to 73 metres, while notable details include a large wheel window, side chapels and an apse with traceried windows. Austin and Paley added the octagonal baptistry in 1901, featuring a marble font and stained glass by Shrigley and Hunt. Francis Roberts reorganised the eastern interior in 1995.
