About St Wilfrid's
St Wilfrid’s stands on Church Brow in Halton, Lancashire. This Church of England place of worship remains an active parish church within the Diocese of Blackburn, Archdeaconry of Lancaster and Deanery of Tunstall. It is protected as a Grade II listed building and shares its benefice with churches in Aughton and Slyne-with-Hest.
Christian worship may have taken place here during the Anglo-Saxon period, and a church dedicated to St Wilfrid was recorded by 1252. The surviving west tower was added in the 16th century, while Paley and Austin rebuilt the rest in 1876–77. Yellow sandstone rubble and red tiled roofs form the exterior, which includes a nave, north aisle, chancel and a timber-framed upper porch. Notable features include three bells, fragments of Anglo-Saxon sculpture, an 1848 font, and stained glass by Shrigley and Hunt portraying Joan of Arc and Saint George. The churchyard contains an 11th-century carved cross and a sundial dated 1635.
