About St John's

St John’s stands on Church Street in Blackpool, Lancashire, and serves as an active Church of England parish church. Dedicated to John the Evangelist, it belongs to the Diocese of Blackburn, within the Province of York, and forms part of Blackpool Deanery and Lancaster Archdeaconry. The building is protected with Grade II listed status.

The first church on the site opened in 1821, before being extended several times as the congregation increased. It gained its own parish in 1860, but the earlier structure was demolished in 1877 to make way for a larger church, completed the following year. Garlick, Park and Sykes designed the present building in an Early English Gothic style, using yellow stone, slate roofing and dressed stone inside. Its south-west tower rises in four stages, with angled supports, pinnacles and finials. Other features include tall transepts, an apsidal chancel and a nave lined with cylindrical columns. Restoration was undertaken in 1986, followed by extensive renovation between 2000 and 2006.
