About St Mary's Church, Mellor

St Mary’s Church, Mellor, is an active Church of England parish church in Mellor, Blackburn, Lancashire. It belongs to the Diocese of Blackburn and is protected as a Grade II listed building. Construction was supported by funding from the Church Building Commission.

Built from 1827 to 1829, the church was designed by Thomas Rickman and Henry Hutchinson. Its sandstone walls and slate roofing enclose a nave of six bays, aisles and a chancel, while the three-stage western tower rises to a slender recessed spire. Austin and Paley carried out restoration and alterations between 1897 and 1899, raising the eastern end and adding the choir screen and fittings. Inside are clustered-column arcades, a western organ gallery, a white marble font and stained glass dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The organ was made by Renn and Boston and enlarged in 1897. The churchyard contains Commonwealth war graves from both world wars.
