About Blackburn Cathedral

Blackburn Cathedral is a Church of England cathedral in Blackburn, Lancashire, dedicated to Saint Mary the Virgin and Saint Paul. It became the seat of the newly established Diocese of Blackburn in 1926. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building.

Christian worship has taken place on the site for many centuries, with evidence of a Norman stone building beneath the later church. The medieval structure was demolished after falling into disrepair, and architect John Palmer designed its replacement, built from 1820 to 1826. His Gothic Revival scheme included a three-level western tower, battlements, tall aisle windows and a clerestory above the nave. Enlargement began in 1938 but was delayed by wartime shortages and rising costs. Revised post-war work added an octagonal reinforced-concrete lantern, crowned by an aluminium flèche and completed in 1967.
