About St Gabriel's Church

St Gabriel’s Church is an active Church of England place of worship on Brownhill Drive in Blackburn, Lancashire. The Grade II listed building occupies a prominent position on the town’s outskirts and is recognised as an important work in the development of modern English church architecture.

F. X. Velarde designed the church, which was built from 1932 to 1934 for £20,000 and was his first Anglican commission. Brick is the principal building material, while the interior has rendered walls and wood-block flooring. Its original design combined a long, sparsely lit nave with colourful decoration and fittings in chrome and stainless steel. Serious structural problems identified in 1969 led to extensive renovation between the early 1970s and 1977, including the loss of several original modernist elements. Brian Clarke created two stained-glass windows for the baptistery during this work. The organ was made by Jardine & Co. Ltd.
