About St James' Church, Church Kirk
St James' Church, Church Kirk, stands in the Church area of Accrington, Lancashire. Formerly an Anglican parish church in the Diocese of Blackburn, it closed in November 2015 and is now redundant. The building has Grade II* listed status.
Christian worship on the site dates back to AD 642, and tradition links it with St Oswald before his journey to fight King Penda. The sandstone building has slate roofs, with a late medieval west tower and a nave dating from 1804–05. Its chancel was constructed in 1895–96, when Victorian tracery was also fitted to the Georgian-style nave windows. Galleries inside are supported by fluted, octagonal cast-iron columns. Notable fittings include a 1909 opus sectile reredos by J. Powell & Sons and stained glass showing the Four Evangelists, remade by Morris & Co. in 1918 from Edward Burne-Jones’s designs after an explosion damaged the originals.
