About Cannon Street Baptist Church
Cannon Street Baptist Church stands in Accrington, Lancashire. Formerly used by a Baptist congregation, the church is recognised as a Grade II listed building.
The congregation began around 1735, when a small group gathered at John Ellison’s home in Oakenshaw. It built its first chapel in 1754 and became independent from the Bacup congregation six years later. Successive places of worship followed, including a Blackburn Road chapel completed in 1836. Fundraising for the Cannon Street building began in 1863, and James Barlow laid its foundation stone on Whit Monday in 1872. The church and its school cost approximately £12,000 and welcomed worshippers from 19 March 1874. William Hill & Son supplied a three-manual organ with 23 stops that year. Jardine and Co expanded it to 30 stops in 1899, with later work increasing the total to 35.
