About St Saviour's, Walmer
St Saviour’s, Walmer is a Church of England place of worship facing the coast at Walmer in Kent. It was originally intended as an additional chapel for local boatmen, who delivered provisions to ships lying in the Downs during the age of sail. Its opening also reduced pressure on Old St Mary’s, which had previously been Walmer’s only parish church.
The Neo-Gothic building dates from 1848 and was planned by the Adelphi architect I. Johnson FSA, with William Denne responsible for its construction. Mrs J. T. Bridges laid its first stone on 15 August 1848, and the Archbishop of Canterbury formally dedicated it on 2 July 1849. J. T. Bridges met a substantial share of the building costs and funded a meal for hundreds of poorer residents following the ceremony. Despite its name, the dedication is directly to Christ as the Holy Saviour, rather than to a canonised saint.
