About St Mary's Church, Ticehurst

St Mary’s Church, Ticehurst is an active Church of England parish church in Ticehurst, Kent, under the patronage of the Virgin Mary. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building and has formed a joint benefice with nearby St Augustine’s at Flimwell since 1978.

Records identify a priest serving Ticehurst in 1180, and surviving tower masonry may belong to the 13th century. Extensive later changes include the near-total reconstruction of the chancel in 1856 and the addition of battlements to the aisle walls, porch and turret towards the end of the Victorian period. Medieval glass, moved from the former eastern window, survives in a northern sanctuary window depicting the Last Judgement. Its replacement at the east end was fitted in 1879, with a prize-winning central section exhibited in Paris the previous year. Further highlights include a circa-1365 brass for John Wyborne, Cecily and Agnes, a 1909 organ, and Martin Travers’s 1940s triptych showing the Annunciation.
