About Domestic chapel at Horne's Place
Domestic chapel at Horne's Place is a medieval private chapel at Stone-in-Oxney in Kent, attached to a timber-framed manor house. It is protected as a scheduled monument and was also given Grade II* listed status in 1952. The chapel may be viewed, while the adjoining house remains a private residence.
A chapel was established on the estate after Matthew Horne received the manor in 1276, and Archbishop Simon Langham authorised worship there in 1366. Built from Kentish ragstone and rubble, it measures about eight by four metres and has a tiled roof, renewed in 1520, above a stone-flagged floor. Its windows include cinquefoil tracery, while the roof is supported by four richly moulded arch braces resting on stone corbels carved with Catherine-wheel designs. A blocked doorway once connected it with the manor hall, and a barrel-vaulted undercroft lies below. The building served as a barn during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
