About Church of St Thomas à Becket
The Church of St Thomas à Becket is a Church of England church at Stone-in-Oxney, Kent, standing in the marshes near the former settlement of Fairfield. Reached today along a footpath, it occupies an isolated site bordered by drainage ditches and has no churchyard. The building is protected at Grade I.
Built around 1450 where a church had existed from the thirteenth century, the structure comprises a nave, a compact chancel, a south porch and a western bell turret with timber shingles. Its timber frame was originally infilled with wattle and daub. Brick replaced the outer walls during eighteenth-century work, while an extensive restoration in 1912–13 renewed numerous timbers and added fresh brick facing. Inside are white-painted box pews, a Kentish ragstone font dating from the fifteenth or sixteenth century, early eighteenth-century altar rails and Kent’s sole remaining three-tier pulpit. The chancel’s east window holds stained glass from the early twentieth century.
