About Church of All Saints, Murston
The Church of All Saints, Murston is a Church of England building in Sittingbourne, Kent. Designed by William Burges, it has been protected at Grade II since 1974. Regular services are no longer held there, and the building serves as the home of the Murston Community Bank, established in 2014 through a partnership involving the Diocese of Canterbury and Kent Savers Credit Union.
A predecessor church was built in 1291, but nearby brickworks and gasworks later made worship difficult because of industrial pollution. A replacement was erected on a different site in 1873–74 and consecrated in 1874. Burges used an early Gothic design and incorporated older fabric, including twelfth-century fragments and pillars bearing mediaeval graffiti rediscovered in 2022. Most of the earlier building was demolished, although part of its chancel remained as a mortuary. Limited public subscriptions meant that the planned tower was completed in shortened form.
