About St Peter's Church, Sandwich
St Peter’s Church, Sandwich, stands in the Kent town of Sandwich. This former Anglican place of worship is Grade I listed and is now maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. Following the union of three local parishes in 1948, regular services moved to St Clement’s. St Peter’s was formally made redundant in 1973.
A Norman building existed here around 1100, but may have been lost during the French assault of 1216. Its medieval replacement later gained an enlarged northern aisle, a chantry chapel and a porch. Pebbles, masonry rubble and brick feature in the fabric beneath tiled roofing. When the tower failed in 1661, it wrecked the southern aisle; Sandwich’s Flemish congregation reconstructed the tower with a domed lantern while leaving that aisle as a ruin. Nineteenth-century repairs, some possibly overseen by William White, included work after storm damage. Inside are medieval seating for clergy, recessed tomb spaces, royal heraldry, a compact organ and eight William Mears bells dating to 1779.
