About St Mary's Church

St Mary’s Church occupies Strand Street in the northern part of Sandwich, Kent. Formerly serving an Anglican parish, it is now redundant but retains its consecrated status and sometimes holds worship. Listed at Grade I, the building is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. It is also used for weddings and cultural events under the name St Mary’s Arts Centre.

A religious house founded by Domneva between 664 and 673 first occupied the site. Danish raids destroyed it, after which Emma, the wife of King Canute, had it reconstructed. Another rebuilding followed the Norman Conquest, and the current church dates from about 1150. Its tower collapsed in 1667, taking the nave arcades with it, while Joseph Clarke oversaw substantial restoration from 1869 to 1874. Flint and stone form most of the fabric, with tiles covering the roofs. Features include a timber-framed arcade, a porch topped by a small wooden belfry, a font from 1662, medieval tiles, memorials and later stained glass.
