About Church of St Nicholas
The Church of St Nicholas stands beside Rochester Cathedral in Rochester, Kent. A Grade I listed Church of England building, it no longer serves as a parish church and is now used as the headquarters of the Diocese of Rochester’s Board of Education.
The parish had previously worshipped at an altar within the cathedral, but following a dispute with the Bishop of Rochester it was directed to establish a separate church in 1421. Built immediately north of the cathedral, the new building was finished in 1423. After falling into disrepair, it was partly taken down and reconstructed before being consecrated again in 1624. Its seventeenth-century Gothic design included Decorated-style window tracery, later replaced during restoration work in 1860–62. Notable features include a three-stage north tower, fifteenth-century doorways, five-bay internal arcades carried on Tuscan columns, and an old timber bell frame made for three bells. Diocesan offices were created within the western end and aisles in 1963–64.
