About Church of St Nicholas, Pluckley

The Church of St Nicholas stands in Pluckley, Kent, and serves as an active Church of England parish church, with worship each Sunday. It belongs to the Benefice of Calehill with Westwell and has held Grade I listed status since 1967.

Christian worship was established on the site by 1090, while most of the surviving structure was built in the fourteenth century from Kentish ragstone. A Norman section remains at the north-west of the nave, and earlier blocked lancets survive at the east end. The chancel, tower window, doorway and spire are fourteenth-century additions. During the fifteenth century, the building was enlarged with a southern aisle, porch and chapel. The chapel dates from 1475 and contains a font displaying the Dering family arms. Nine brass memorials from medieval and Tudor times commemorate several members of that family, including John Dering, who died in 1425.
