About St Anselm's Catholic Church
St Anselm’s Catholic Church stands in Pembury, Kent, and serves a Roman Catholic community within the ordinariate dedicated to Our Lady of Walsingham. It became a quasi-parish in 2011 after many Anglicans from St Barnabas’ in Royal Tunbridge Wells entered the Catholic Church. The congregation has preserved aspects of its Anglican liturgical heritage.
The 1964 building was conceived as both a hall and a place for worship for the Catholic mission covering Pembury and Paddock Wood. After property intended for a separate church was sold in 1978, a compact chapel was formed inside the hall in 1980. For many years it provided subsidiary accommodation for services connected with the Paddock Wood parish. When the ordinariate community first occupied the building, worship centred on a wheeled altar and the premises remained available to community organisations. Donations from congregants and surrounding Catholic parishes subsequently provided a permanent altar, devotional Stations and additional fittings. An entrance lychgate was constructed, and the premises were then set aside exclusively for worship.
