About Chapel Of Ease Of St Luke

The Chapel Of Ease Of St Luke is an Anglican parish church at Pembury in Kent, dedicated to Luke the Evangelist. The church continues in religious use and has Grade II listed protection.

Basil Champneys designed the building, which was erected during 1874–76 and first opened in the latter year. Much of his original work remains, although an enlargement was completed in 1965. Its compact west tower carries a steep Kentish roof and one bell, produced in 1877 by the London foundry of John Warner and Sons. Within, the nave arcade reflects thirteenth-century English Gothic design, while the timber roof takes inspiration from Brenchley’s medieval church. Features include an eight-sided stone font with a wooden lid, a brass lectern shaped as an eagle, and a commemorative altar given in 1927. F H Brown and Sons made the organ in 1892; parish fundraising enabled its substantial refurbishment in 1974. Kempe stained glass was installed in 1893, and Jenny Clark’s suspended glass artwork followed in 1991.
