About St Andrew's Church, Paddock Wood
St Andrew's Church, Paddock Wood, is a shared Anglican and Methodist place of worship in Paddock Wood, Kent. Methodist and Church of England congregations have worshipped together there since 1979, when the town’s Methodist chapel shut and the two traditions formed an ecumenical partnership with joint services.
The first church opened in 1851 but suffered extensive damage from a direct bomb strike in November 1940, which brought down its roof. After temporary services were held in a school hall, the present church was constructed on a site farther south during the 1950s. Its post-war brick design incorporates details influenced by Gothic Anglican architecture, while the altar and lectern were recovered from the earlier building. At the western end, a rose window by Joan Howson commemorates John Brunt VC, who formerly lived in Paddock Wood. A Fairtrade shop occupies the northern part of the church complex.
