About Church of St Thomas à Becket, Capel
The Church of St Thomas à Becket, Capel is a disused Anglican church at Paddock Wood in Kent. Dating from the Norman period and traditionally assigned to about 1150, it holds Grade I listed status and is preserved by the Churches Conservation Trust. A local tradition associates Thomas Becket with preaching either here or beside a churchyard yew.
Built chiefly of sandstone beneath clay tiles, the church comprises a nave, chancel, northern vestry and a broad, low tower serving as the entrance. Its chancel arch is thirteenth-century, while the nave and tower were added during the following century or in the early 1400s. Part of the tower was reconstructed after a 1639 fire, and Victorian work renewed the chancel and southern wall. Notable furnishings include a probably medieval octagonal font, communion rails dated 1662 and east-window glass from 1905. Medieval murals uncovered in 1927 illustrate episodes featuring Cain and Abel and Jesus arriving in Jerusalem.
