About St Lawrence's Church, Mereworth

St Lawrence’s Church, Mereworth is an active Church of England parish church in Nettlestead, Kent. It forms part of the Diocese of Rochester within the Canterbury province. Its exceptional historical and architectural interest is reflected in its designation at Grade I.

The present stone church was commissioned by John Fane, 7th Earl of Westmorland, when the earlier medieval building was cleared to make room for the enlargement of Mereworth Castle. Construction started in 1744, and the new place of worship was consecrated in 1746. Designed in a Neo-Palladian manner, it features a tower crowned by a tall spire, though the identity of its architect is unknown. Items brought from its predecessor include stained glass displaying coats of arms, together with accomplished memorials made from brass and stone. The spire was renewed in 1870 and repaired following Second World War bombing. The bells have also undergone repairs, a clock was installed in the tower, and further conservation took place in 2009.
