About Luddenham Church
Luddenham Church is a redundant Church of England church in Luddenham, Kent, standing within a farmyard about two miles north-west of Faversham. Dating from around 1150, it is protected at Grade I and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. The building is open to visitors each day.
The church originated in the 12th century, with the chancel added in the 13th century. Built chiefly of flint, it incorporates reused Roman tiles, while parts are rendered and the roofs are tiled. Its simple layout comprises a nave, chancel, south porch and a tower at the south-west corner. The tower retains a 12th-century flint base, but its brick upper stage was rebuilt in 1807 and finished with a battlemented parapet. Restoration took place from 1881 to 1884, followed by the porch in 1889. Notable details include a Norman west doorway with zigzag ornament and a 13th-century coffin cover carved with hands clasping a heart.
