About St Leonard's
St Leonard's is an active Church of England parish church on Oak Walk, in the Kent town of Hythe. Standing on higher ground, it holds Grade I listed status and has served the local parish since the mediaeval period.
Construction began towards the end of the eleventh century. An earthquake brought down the western tower in 1739, and the structure was reconstructed eleven years later. Features include a Norman entrance beside the nave, mediaeval images of vessels scratched into its southern columns, and Roman stone incorporated within a slender arch displaying late Saxon characteristics. A vestry extension dates to 1959. Below the chancel, built around 1220, is an uncommon bone chamber holding approximately 2,000 skulls and 8,000 femurs, thought to represent between 2,000 and 4,000 individuals. The churchyard contains the grave of Lionel Lukin, who is credited with devising a lifeboat capable of righting itself.
