About St Nicholas's Church, Leeds
St Nicholas's Church, Leeds is an active Church of England parish church in Hollingbourne, Kent. Originating in the medieval period and first built during the eleventh century, it developed through additions made over the following five centuries. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building and is included on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.
Local ragstone and tufa form much of the structure, beneath roofs of plain clay tiles. A substantial square western tower has heavy buttresses, a battlemented top and a timber spire added in 1963, modelled on a fifteenth-century predecessor. Its ten bells include a tenor cast in 1617 and nine bells from the 1750s, while the clock dates from the 1730s. Inside are fifteenth-century nave arcades, medieval screens, a crown-post nave roof and a barrel-vaulted chancel roof. Memorials commemorate figures including Katherine Lambe, the Dowager Countess of Carbery and members of the Meredith family.
