About St Mary the Virgin Church
St Mary the Virgin Church stands on Reculver Lane in Hillborough, near Herne Bay, Kent. This Church of England place of worship continues to serve its parish within the Diocese of Canterbury. Protected at Grade II, it is part of a shared benefice with St Bartholomew in Herne Bay and Holy Cross in Hoath.
Joseph Clarke designed the present Gothic Revival building, which opened in 1878 after work began two years earlier. It replaced an unsound church erected there in 1813, itself the successor to a place of worship established at Reculver in 669. Flint facing, limestone details and red roof tiles define the exterior, while a stone bell housing contains a single bell. Older fabric includes a thirteenth-century doorway and masonry salvaged from the former Reculver church. Memorial stones from the seventeenth century lie inside, alongside a medieval font thought to have come from the lost All Saints Church at Shuart.
