About The Parish Church of St Mary and St Eanswythe

The Parish Church of St Mary and St Eanswythe stands on Church Street in Folkestone, Kent, close to the Channel coast. It serves as an Anglican parish church within the Church of England and has Grade II* protection for its architectural and historic importance.

Its origins lie in a priory founded in 1138 under the joint patronage of Mary and Eanswythe. Following a blaze in 1216, the building underwent repairs in 1220 and further enlargement sixteen years later. Medieval fabric remains, including the chancel’s 13th-century arcades, 15th-century side chapels and arches supporting the distinctive tower at the centre. Extensive Victorian reconstruction included work on the nave and northern aisle during the 1850s, followed by a new western window and entrance porch in 1872. C. E. Kempe provided glass for the sanctuary and Lady Chapel. William Hill & Sons installed the organ in 1894; Hill, Norman & Beard expanded it in 1930.
