About St Paul's Church, Dover
St Paul’s Church serves the Roman Catholic community in Dover, Kent. The church stands on Maison Dieu Road, near Pencester Gardens and within the town centre. Since 2015, it has belonged to the Good Shepherd parish alongside St Finbarr’s at Aylesham, and remains in regular use for Mass.
A Catholic mission was established in Dover during 1822, gathering first in houses and later in a former Wesleyan chapel. Growth in the congregation led to the purchase of the present plot in 1864. E. W. Pugin designed the Gothic Revival building, which was erected during 1867 and 1868 at a cost of £2,300. Bishop Thomas Grant opened it on 15 May 1868, and an apse was completed five years later. Changes made in 1959 and 1964 affected the sanctuary and nave. An arson attack in October 1987 ruined both the roof and organ. Restoration commenced in June 1988, allowing the church to return to use that October.
