About St Mary sub Castro, Dover
St Mary sub Castro stands within the outer enclosure of Dover Castle on the Eastern Heights. This Grade I listed Church of England church remains in use, serving both local residents and the Army as Dover Garrison’s church. Its varying historic names reflect its position on the castle hill, below the Main Tower.
A church may have existed here around 600, although the surviving Anglo-Saxon building dates from about 1000. It has a cross-shaped plan, an aisleless nave and a central tower, while Roman tiles, flint and other material taken from the neighbouring Roman lighthouse were incorporated into its walls. The lighthouse was later adapted as a bell tower and linked to the church. Medieval additions included a vault and an altar recess. After centuries of neglect and alternative use as storage, the building was restored by George Gilbert Scott from 1860 to 1862, with further work by William Butterfield in 1888.
