About Eythorne Baptist Church
Eythorne Baptist Church is an active Baptist place of worship on Chapel Hill in the Dover area of Kent. It has been described by the nineteenth-century Baptist historian J. J. Goadby as among England’s three oldest Baptist congregations. The church also has continuing links with village chapels at Adisham and Nonington.
Its origins lie in gatherings of Baptists who fled religious persecution in the Low Countries during the early sixteenth century, meeting with English supporters in Eythorne and Canterbury. A meeting house seating about 60 was probably erected around 1755 and enlarged in 1773. Baptisms began to be held in Eythorne in 1786, rather than in the sea or river near Sandwich. In 1804, retired Dover banker Peter Fector offered £500 for the earlier building and provided an acre for a replacement. The present chapel was completed and opened later that year and remains in use.
