About Church of St Mary the Virgin, Fordwich
The Church of St Mary the Virgin, Fordwich is a former Anglican place of worship in the town of Fordwich, about three miles north-east of Canterbury in Kent. Dating from around 1050, it is protected at Grade I and is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust, having closed for regular worship in 1995.
The church has Norman origins, with earlier Anglo-Saxon fabric surviving in the nave. Its chancel and northern aisle were added during the 12th century, while the western tower followed in the 13th century. Built from ragstone, flint, brick and other stone, it has tiled roofs, a wooden porch and a shingled spire. Notable features include a Norman-style Bethersden marble font, medieval glass showing Marian scenes and evangelists’ symbols, 18th-century enclosed pews and royal arms dated 1688. A limestone object known as the Fordwich stone may once have formed part of a saint’s shrine. The church also contains a Holdich organ and four 17th-century bells, which can no longer be rung.
