About St Eanswith's Church, Brenzett
St Eanswith’s Church, Brenzett is a Church of England church in the Kent village of Brenzett. Recognised for its architectural and historic importance, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building. Its dedication honours Saint Eanswith, a seventh-century Kentish princess associated with a religious community at Folkestone.
Christian worship began on the site with a church established during the seventh century. The current nave and chancel were built in the 1100s to replace that Saxon structure. A northern aisle and chapel followed in the next century, while the nave was lengthened westwards during the 1300s. A shingled timber spire from the same period is supported by an internal wooden framework and external buttresses. The three bells date from 1420, 1630 and 1699. Later work included nineteenth-century restoration, an east window installed in 1874, and substantial rebuilding of the chancel in 1902. The north chapel contains a memorial to John Fagge and his son, both of whom died in the seventeenth century.
