About St Mary Magdalene Church, Stockbury
St Mary Magdalene Church, Stockbury is a Church of England parish church in Bicknor, Kent. It remains the parish church and is protected as a Grade I listed building, reflecting its exceptional architectural and historic interest.
Building began in the late twelfth century, around 1200, with parts of the chancel and north aisle surviving from that period. Flint walls are finished with stone details, beneath plain tiled roofs. The fifteenth-century western tower has two levels, a battlemented top and gargoyles, while its circular stair turret carries a weathervane dated 1676. R. C. Hussey rebuilt the nave and south aisle during the nineteenth century, when further restoration also took place. Inside are four-bay arcades, crown-post roofs, a font with a shaped wooden cover and a piscina in the chancel. Memorial brasses in the chancel floor commemorate John and Dorothy Hooper, who died in 1617 and 1648.
