About St John the Evangelist
St John the Evangelist is an active Anglican parish church on Saint John’s Road in Ventnor, Isle of Wight. It belongs to the Church of England and serves the parish of Wroxall. The church is recognised as a Grade II listed building.
T. R. Saunders designed the building, which was erected from 1875 to 1877. The Archdeacon of Winchester conducted its consecration on 21 December 1877. Initially accommodating 130 worshippers, it included the main worship space, sanctuary, southern entrance porch, an organ room and a small bell structure at the western end, fitted with one bell. The masonry came from rock extracted during work on the nearby railway tunnel at Ventnor. This reduced construction costs, although the stone later deteriorated and has needed regular renewal to its outer surfaces. The tower followed in 1911. A. Hunter & Son supplied the organ.
