About Saint Blasius

Saint Blasius is an active Church of England parish church on Church Road in Shanklin, Isle of Wight. Also called Shanklin Old Church, it stands near the southern edge of the parish, where the routes towards Wroxall and Ventnor meet. The building has Grade II* listed status.

The church has medieval origins and was initially a simple, aisleless manorial chapel with its nave and chancel aligned. Transepts, a western extension and a bell turret were added in 1852, followed by extensive rebuilding in 1859. Its bell ropes descend into the nave, allowing the congregation to see the ringers. Other features include a Renaissance oak chest, memorials to the Hill and Popham families, and a lychgate incorporating a clock and bell. The pipe organ was made by Forster and Andrews in 1874, while the parish registers survive from 1717.
