About St Helens Church
St Helens Church is a Church of England parish church on Eddington Road in Seaview, Isle of Wight. It is protected as a Grade II listed building and continues to serve as the parish church.
Following the Norman Conquest, French Benedictine monks established a priory nearby, and an earlier Saxon church was reconstructed for both parish and monastic use. Coastal damage eventually left the medieval building unsafe, and its thirteenth-century tower is the only surviving part. The replacement church was erected farther inland in 1717, rebuilt in 1831, and given a new chancel in 1862. Built of stone with brick detailing, it has a nave without aisles, transepts, a chancel and a western tower containing one bell. Inside is a memorial tablet to Sir Nash Grose and his son Edward. A Gray & Davison organ dating from 1864 was later replaced by a larger Willis and Sons instrument.
