About St Mildred's Church
St Mildred’s Church is the Anglican parish church for Whippingham, near East Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Located on Beatrice Avenue, it remains in parish use and forms a joint benefice with St James’s in East Cowes. The building has Grade I listed protection.
An earlier church by John Nash occupied the place of a vanished medieval predecessor before being replaced during the nineteenth century. Albert Jenkins Humbert designed the chancel, erected in 1854–55 with input attributed to Prince Albert, while the remaining sections were completed in 1861–62. Five tall pinnacles crown a tower whose appearance recalls a Rhineland fortress. Inside are vivid circular windows, an octagonal central lantern and an organ made by Father Willis. Numerous monuments honour Queen Victoria’s family and staff. A separate chapel holds several Battenberg and Mountbatten burials, among them Princess Beatrice and her husband, Prince Henry.
