About St James
St James, on Church Path in East Cowes, is the town’s Church of England parish church. It remains a place of parish worship and is protected as a Grade II listed building. The parish shares its ministry with churches in Whippingham and Wootton.
Designed by John Nash, the church was begun in 1831 on land donated by Thomas Chamberlayne of Cranbury Park. Twelve-year-old Princess Victoria placed the foundation stone on 6 September that year. The building was finished in 1833 at a cost of £3,000, and Victoria attended its consecration with the Duchess of Kent. Thomas Hellyer substantially extended and modified the structure from 1864 to 1868. A chancel and private chapel followed in 1870. Nash, who died in 1835, is buried at the church.
