About St John the Evangelist's Church, Greenock
St John the Evangelist’s Church stands on Union Street in Greenock, Inverclyde. It remains an active Anglican place of worship within the Scottish Episcopal Church and is protected as a Category B listed building.
The present church replaced a smaller building dating from 1824. Designed by the Lancaster practice Sharpe, Paley and Austin, it was begun in 1877 and consecrated on 28 November 1878. It is the firm’s only Scottish church. Built in the Gothic Revival style, it has a clerestoried four-bay nave, chancel, chapel and a substantial square tower with a pyramidal slate roof. Inside, circular and eight-sided piers alternate along the arcades. Notable fittings include H. O. Tarbolton’s richly carved rood screen, decorated with birds and animals, and a font modelled on a fifteenth-century example from Suffolk. The Glasgow-made pipe organ originated as a domestic instrument in the 1850s and underwent extensive reconstruction in 1914.
