About The Barn Church
The Barn Church is a Church of Scotland congregation in Culloden, Inverness. Recognised as an independent parish in the late 1980s, it joined Ardersier and Petty churches in August 2023 to form Culloden and Ardersier Parish Church.
The oldest part was constructed to receive produce owed to the Culloden House estate. Jacobite troops lodged there during the final evening before the 1746 battle nearby. In the nineteenth century, the building housed a smithy, while Inverness East Church began using it for mission work in the early twentieth century. Following its designation as an extension charge during the 1970s, the congregation added an adjoining sanctuary whose design evokes an agricultural building. The original barn now provides hall accommodation. Its surviving features include narrow openings intended for protection and doorways facing one another, which allowed air to pass through when grain was separated from chaff.
