About Fortrose Cathedral
Fortrose Cathedral, near Inverness in the Highland council area, served as the medieval seat of the bishops of Ross. Now a scheduled monument, its surviving ruins stand within grounds that continued to be used for burials after the Scottish Reformation. Although worship carried on for a time, the building deteriorated during the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
Construction began in the early or middle 13th century, after the cathedral community moved from Rosemarkie to Fortrose. Built mainly from red sandstone, the original structure was probably a long rectangular building with a north-west tower, while a sacristy and chapter house adjoined the choir. In the late 14th century, Euphemia, Countess of Ross, commissioned a south-east chapel, aisle and porch. Today, the chapter house and southern nave aisle remain, including two chapels with medieval tombs and heraldic ceiling bosses. Excavations in 1873 traced the plan of the lost sections.
